Johnny Sundby Photography / Samuel’s Studio, is one South Dakota’s most award-winning and busiest photography studios. If the quality of your images matter, you have come to the right place.
Johnny, a photojournalist by trade, and South Dakota's 2015 Photographer of the Year (PPA), has won many awards while shooting for the Rapid City Journal in South Dakota, the Associated Press, and the Miles City Star in Montana. He has done contract work for over 35 different national magazines and newspapers including the L.A. Times, Newsweek, Time, Country, Western Horseman, USA Today and Denver Post. In 1995 he was named Best Photographer in S.D. by Eyes on You Magazine, and in 2004 his work and he were featured in American Cowboy Magazine.
In 2013 Johnny merged studios with friend and mentor Edgar Matuska’s Samuel’s Studio. Edgar was South Dakota Photographer of the Year (PPA) 13 times, and won an unprecedented 350 merits in the PPA for his print making, teaching, and judging – one of the highest merit counts in the worldwide history of the PPA.
In 2006 we moved to our custom-built 3,800 square foot studio in West Rapid City built of Douglas fir timbers, and mossy limestone. Our camera room is 28’x35’ with 17 foot ceilings and an oak hardwood floor. It is fully-equipped with over 50 backdrops, plus numerous props, a cozy dressing room, surround-sound, and a wide array of professional lighting. Our viewing room has a theater-like atmosphere with brand new couches and a new 60 inch big screen TV to show your images in almost cinematic style! We archive your images in several ways and have the original files dating back to our beginning in 1991.
Our staff consists of three photographers, a graphic designer, and two customer service representatives.
